Spring forward!
We are so super stoked that Daylight Savings has rolled around again! We’re able to do more work outside now that we have a little more daylight. Paul can actually get a little tractor time in after work most days.
Our property is sort of terraced, there’s quite a sizable grade difference from the back of the property to the front. It steps down probably about 20 feet if not more. The property was severely neglected for years and washed out majorly in several areas. So we decided we needed to have some dirt brought it to start to build everything back up.
We hooked up with a company looking to get rid of fill dirt and the dump truck started coming. The first day he brought 1 load for us to ‘sample’. It was acceptable with minimal debris, only some grass bits in it. So we set up to have another 5 loads brought. Those came and Paul worked daily with his fancy new tractor to move the dirt to where we needed it most.
Then more dirt came. Paul kept that tractor busy every chance he got and moved dirt and moved dirt and moved dirt. Then more dirt came, and more and more! Well, we lost count but we think we’re at about 30 loads to date! That’s a lot of dirt! Currently it’s stacked up behind the barn and beside the barn in mounds that are 5 foot tall. Thankfully we have multiple entrance points into the barn because one is completely blocked currently!
We’re moving some of the dirt into the pastures to try and change the composition of this damn Florida sugar sand! It’s so…soft you can barely walk through it, really it very much like quick sand no joke. Once we get it into the pasture we’ll seed it with a pasture grass mix and cross our fingers and toes. Hopefully with a lot of watering and some praying we’ll get some green grass growing.
We’re also starting to change the shape of the land a bit. The washed out areas are getting filled in and we hope to get some lawn grass growing soon. I close my eyes and envision green grass all around, a heavenly vision. Right now when I open my eyes from that beautifully green vision I just see brown sand everywhere and faint wisps of grass here and there. It pretty sad and lifeless.
I wait all week for Thursday night to roll around because Paul has Fridays and Saturdays off. That means for the next 2 days Paul is mine! Well, sort of lol. He’s my tractor man for his days off and a pretty handsome one at that! There’s something about a man on a tractor with dirty jeans and dirty cowboys boots that makes my heart skip a beat! I digress. Where was I? Oh, yeah, tractor…moving dirt. Yes, our weekend lately have been spent moving dirt. We even had our neighbor join in with his tractor too. Man alive, it goes sooo much faster with 2 tractors going at the same time!
